Ashburton Antics from Valmai - October
2004
Hello everyone
October has seen the democratic local body Government elections all over NZ and Ashburton is no exception. Many towns and cities see new faces at the helm from this time of the year on and Bede O’Malley has been elected to the position of Mayor, replacing the previous Mayor of 8 years.
The Springston Trophy has been and gone, and apart from a showery Friday when dressage tests were held, the weather was fairly suitable for the 2 following days of cross country eventing, and showjumping.. The winner overall was a team from Rakaia
46 teams took part from all over the South Island, with 273 riders.
The opening of the fishing season saw a delighted 8 year old catch an almost 3kg brown trout at Lake Hood. What an exciting way for a beginner to start the season. Ken and some friends went off with boats to fish the hydro –electric lakes in St Canterbury, and came home with some delicious catches, one of the better weekends fishing, with the fish in very good condition.
Labour week-end is coming up and that weekend will see the Plains museum and railway buzzing - or should I say puffing! - there will be a Rogers Sisters Reunion, with the K88 and K92 on the tracks.
There will be activity all over town and afar, at the 1st summer camping week end for the season, and people will be out and about enjoying the many activities that are on during the long weekend.
The very last weekend of the month will see the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Show ( the A&P Show) held over the Friday, 29th and Saturday 30th. The very best of farm animals, machinery, house and garden produce, horses and some exotic animals will be on show and competing against each other.
Surrounding farming districts will have finished lambing and the dairy farms are in full milk production and with the warmer weather, the grass is growing nicely. As I write this, there is a hot Nor West wind that is inclined to dry the moisture out of the soil, but it is nice to have a chance to put on summer clothes… it’s 25 + degrees. We’ve had some late frosts and the snow has been still on the mountains, with the expectation the ski season will be going for another 2 weeks.
