Ashburton Antics from Valmai - September
2004
Last month I really tempted fate when I said that August was treating us well as far as the weather went!. Following that statement, we had a series of very cold spells, with snow and rain and cold winds. And the newspaper reported it was the coldest August in over 10 years
But, now September is here we can feel spring in the air. Blossom is bursting out and bulbs and spring flowering shrubs are a delight all over the district. Days are stretching out too, and it makes one feel better when the sun shines early.Lambs and calves are the order of the day on the farms and staff are kept busy with a multiple lamb birth rate. We have a pet lamb this year and when the town grandchildren come later in the month in the school holidays, they will no doubt vie for the joy of feeding (as yet unnamed) him.
Seems to be a time of anniversaries, with the Scottish society celebrating 100yrs, and the organisation will hold a series of events over the next few weeks, commencing with a ball. It has been held and was most successful with a good crowd dancing the night away.On Sept 26th there will be a Grand Celidh at the Sinclair Centre, and on Oct 3rd a Centennial Luncheon at Brigadoon will conclude festivities.
Bookarama delights book lovers and that will open Sept 27th-OCT 2nd The organizers are not only seeking books to sell, but CD’s, jigsaws, videos, records and tapes.
Ashburton Salvation Army, will be marking 120 years of functioning and service this month.Sept 19th will see a celebratory worship service, a street meeting, a concert and an afternoon tea. This will mark the establishment of the Ashburton Corps by a group of 8 Salvationists from Waimate, Christchurch, Sydenham and Timaru.
Boulevard Day is on 27th Sept, with the theme being a “Golden Glow”- wonder if that has anything to do with the recent Olympic Games? Boulevard day is when the shops come out onto the main street in a market style:there will also be stalls of many kinds from art and craft to raffles, face painting etc…a real gala day. East st.(the main street) is closed to traffic for the day.
Till next month -Valma.
