Newsletter & Events - Ashburton NZ Ashburton Antics from Valmai - August
2004
Winter in Ashburton doesn’t seem so bad this year, probably because we’ve not had any snow down on the flat, though Mt Hutt has a good covering and the ski season is in full swing. The Big Air, Methven’s big snow festival is coming up on the week-end of the 14th August and the programme of spectacular snowboard, ski, and action will provide something for everyone. A family weekend.
Not being ski-ing people ourselves, we do encourage our visitors to enjoy all that the snow has to offer and so close too.
The Winter Waste festival is now on in the Ashburton area, with displays, workshops, demonstrations, lectures and finally the great fashion parade.27th July through to 13th August.Ashburton has an enthusiastic Waste Busters Trust which has their own website www.wastebusters.orcon.net.nz
The Homeshow will be here shortly with all kinds of interesting things to see for the homemaker, 28-29th August.
As I said last time, the Springston Trophy Competition for Pony clubs is being held 30th September to 3rd October so many of the clubs are getting their ponies and riders fit for the 3 day events.
Recently a Youth Broker was appointed to work alongside schools and colleges to provide advice, information and guidance for young people interested in careers, such as plumbing, carpentry and agriculture. Rachel Lloyd’s role has been funded in conjunction with Enterprise Ashburton, Work and Income, and the Mayoral Task force for Jobs. There is a major shortage of skilled labour around town, and one of Ms Lloyd’s challenges will be to stem the brain drain of young people leaving the district. A new and innovative idea.
August 20th will see the announcements of the Business Awards for the area. There are many categories for the old and new businesses who want to make a name for themselves in the field of excellence and efficiency.
Took a friend down to Lake Hood last Sunday week ago, and what a picture as we came over the slight brow of the hill that leads down to the Lake: little P Class yachts skimming over the surface of the water, jet skis in another area, and further over, larger sail boats could be seen. Families picnicing around the edge of the water and others like us, catching up on all that’s new. The 2nd stage of section development is underway, and the place is starting to get busy with houses going up on the 1st stage area. The rowing Club is constantly raising money to fund boats, oars and everything needed to get them on the water.
